Public Art Lecture Series

In an ongoing effort to support publicly accessible art in Maine, the Maine Arts Commission proudly announces a one-time competitive grant program offering up to $4,000 each to at least six successful applicants in order to host outstanding lecturers on the theme: “Public Art: What’s the Use?”.

This theme is intended to attract topics and lecturers that reflect current innovations in the realm of public art, with an emphasis on work – whether ephemeral or permanent, material or performative, large-scale or small – that serves some purpose that extends beyond merely artistic considerations. Applicants may employ the broadest possible definitions of “public” and “art” when nominating a speaker, topic and venue.

There are no restrictions on who/what may be proposed, but applicants must provide a detailed description (in 500 words or fewer) of the speaker, topic, and lecture event for which grant support is requested, along with details related to venue, scheduling, promotion, follow-up, and the speaker’s qualifications or curriculum vitae.

The goal of this lecture series is to support a wide range of speakers, topics, and venues throughout the state and across the 2009 calendar. At the end of the series, the Maine Arts Commission will host a concluding event bringing together select series speakers and hosts to share highlights with the public and to reflect on the many accomplishments of the Percent for Art program since its inception 30 years ago.
